Great little macro/"normal" lens for Nikon DX cameras : Tokina 35mm f/2.8 AT-X PRO DX Macro Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
i have a d90 and a d300s. also two other 'normal' Dx primes, the nikon 35/1.8 and the sigma 30/1.4. so why get the tokina 35 macro?
well, not only is it sharper than my other primes @2.8, but it close-focuses to 5.5 inches. that's extremely close. the sigma has pretty poor close-focus ability, and the nikon has lousy bokeh. the tokina, OTOH, has excellent bokeh--smooth, buttery--and with it, handheld macros are possible.
on most macro lenses,focusing at 1:1 will require a tripod since the camera shake is more pronounced at longer focal lengths, such as the common 90-105mm lenses. but with a shorter macro--the tokina 35 is the equivalent of a 52.5mm lens-- vibration is not such an issue.
the tokina works great for food and flower shots and for close-ups of everyday items. it literally opens up a whole new world of photography. and, it also functions as a normal prime lens, so you can use it as a walkaround. if you dont need a faster aperture for low light, its a pretty great lens and the price is very affordable. another plus is the compact size; it's about the same size as the 35/1.8 or 50/1.8 and takes the same 52mm filters as the 50.
like most tokina AT-X lenses, build quality is top notch. it also has the one touch clutch focus mechanism for quick manual focus adjustments. i actually prefer this over a switch on the side of the lens.
this lens wont AF on a nikon d40, d60, d3000 or d5000. you need a camera with a focus motor to AF with this lens.
